Introduction
The Shopify App Store contains 15,027 apps. But the distribution of merchant attention across those apps is not remotely even — not across the store as a whole, and not within individual categories. Some categories have a single app that has captured the overwhelming majority of merchant trust, measured by review volume. Others are genuinely fragmented, with dozens of apps competing for a merchant base that hasn't consolidated around any clear winner.
Review concentration is the ratio of the top app's reviews to the total review volume in a category. A category where one app holds 85% of all reviews looks fundamentally different from one where the top app holds 12%. The first has a settled market. The second has an open one. For developers deciding what to build, and for merchants trying to understand whether to follow the crowd or look deeper, that distinction matters.
This report maps concentration across every major Shopify app category using AppStacked's full database. The findings are clearer than expected: the gap between monopolised and competitive categories is large, consistent, and actionable.
The closed categories
A small number of categories have effectively settled. One app has accumulated so many reviews relative to the rest of the field that a new entrant would face a trust deficit that compounds with every review the incumbent earns.
Workflow automation is the most extreme case. Shopify Flow holds 86.3% of all reviews in the category. The second-ranked app has 214 reviews — a 42x gap. The top three combined account for 90.3% of all category reviews. This is not a competitive category in any meaningful sense. It is a platform feature that happens to be listed alongside third-party apps.
Animation and effects tells a similar story. Dakas Animated holds 81.6% of category reviews, with the top three combining for 95.2%. Pricing optimisation (68.6% top app, 92.8% top three) and inventory optimisation (68.5%) follow the same pattern. In these categories, the market has delivered a verdict. New apps launching here are not entering a competition — they are entering a category where the default choice already has overwhelming social proof.
When one app holds 80%+ of a category's reviews, the trust deficit for new entrants compounds with every review the incumbent earns.
Most Monopolised Categories — Top App Review Share
Categories where one app has captured the overwhelming majority of merchant trust. In workflow automation, the top app holds 86% of all reviews.
The competitive middle
A second group of categories has a clear leader but has not fully settled. These are contested markets: there is a dominant app, but the gap to second place is bridgeable, and merchant behaviour has not yet converged on a single default.
Subscriptions is the clearest example. Appstle holds 52.9% of category reviews with 6,322 reviews, but Recharge has 2,093 — a 3x gap rather than a 42x one. The category has a leader, but the second-place position is genuinely valuable and genuinely contestable. Ads presents a different version of the same pattern: TikTok holds 53.8% of the category, but Facebook and Instagram sits at 21% of category reviews — a duopoly rather than a monopoly, with the added complexity that Meta's 3.5-star rating represents a real quality gap that a better product could exploit.
Accounts and login (57.6% top app), wishlists (57.5%), and image editor (56.3%) all sit in this contested middle ground. In each case, a strong incumbent exists, but the category has not closed in the way workflow automation or animation has. These categories reward differentiation more than monopolised ones, but still require a developer to identify what the incumbent is not doing for a specific merchant segment.
Contested Categories — Top App vs Top 3 Combined
Categories with a leader but no monopoly. The gap between first and second is bridgeable.
The open categories
The most interesting finding in this dataset is how genuinely fragmented the largest Shopify categories are. In cart customisation, the top app holds 12.5% of reviews across 40 apps. In shipping, the top app holds 10% across 28. In discounts, 16.5% across 44 apps. In product bundles, 17.1% across 38 apps. In product variants, 17.4% across 33 apps. In product reviews, 17.4% across 40 apps. In SEO, 17.2% across 32 apps.
These are not niche categories. Discounts, bundles, variants, reviews, and SEO are among the most-installed app types on the platform. Yet none of them has a dominant player. Merchant attention is distributed across the field, which means the right app for a given store is genuinely open to question — and the opportunity for a new entrant with a sharp, specific angle is real.
The practical implication for developers: fragmented categories are not easy categories. They are categories where the work of differentiation is the only path to standing out, because there is no shortcut of being the clear second-place app in a two-horse race. But they are categories where a developer with a precise merchant job in mind and a strong early-review strategy can build a credible position within 12 months.
In shipping, the top app holds just 10% of category reviews. In cart customisation, 12.5%. These are the largest categories on the platform with no settled winner.

What this means for developers
Review concentration is not the only signal that matters when deciding what to build, but it is one of the most honest ones. It tells you whether the market has already made up its mind. In workflow automation, it has. In shipping and cart customisation, it has not.
The practical read: avoid categories where the top app holds 70%+ unless you have a structural advantage — a specific merchant segment the incumbent ignores, a pricing model that fits a different buyer, or a native integration that changes the value proposition. In those categories you are not competing on product quality alone; you are competing against accumulated social proof that took years to build.
In fragmented categories, the early-review problem is still real, but the ceiling is higher. A new app entering discounts or product variants or cart customisation today is not trying to displace an app with a 40x review lead — it is entering a field where the top app has, at most, a 3-4x lead on the fourth or fifth place. That is a different kind of competition, and one where a strong launch strategy, focused merchant targeting, and genuine support quality can close the gap faster.
What this means for merchants
For merchants, concentration is a shortcut — but only in the right categories. In workflow automation, subscriptions, or animation effects, the review data points clearly to a default choice. You do not need to evaluate ten apps. The market has already done that work.
In fragmented categories, the review count on the top app is not a reliable signal for your store specifically. Shipping has 28 apps, each holding a small share of the category's total reviews. The most-reviewed app in that category may be optimised for a use case that has nothing to do with yours. In these cases, filtering by specific features — delivery zone support, carrier compatibility, label printing — matters more than sorting by total reviews.
AppStacked's category filters are built for exactly this distinction. In concentrated categories, the top app will surface naturally. In fragmented ones, the filters narrow the field to apps that actually fit your workflow, rather than whichever app happened to accumulate the most reviews from the widest possible merchant base.
Methodology
This analysis covers AppStacked's full database of 15,027 Shopify apps as of April 2026. Concentration figures use apps with visibility_status = visible and review_count > 0. Categories with fewer than 3 apps are excluded. Review concentration is calculated as the top app's review count divided by the sum of all review counts in that category. Top 3 concentration is the sum of the top three apps' reviews divided by the category total. All data is current as of the report date and will shift as new reviews accumulate.
Methodology
Based on complete data for all 15,027 apps in AppStacked's database as of April 2026. The full Shopify App Store lists approximately 12,000 apps; this report covers every app AppStacked has indexed. AI-candidate classification uses a broad heuristic — AI-related signals in app names, descriptions, tags, features, and category metadata — and is an inclusive flag, not a strict list of AI-native products only. Review counts, ratings, and launch dates are drawn directly from Shopify App Store listings.
